Space syntax
This paper analyzes the spatial morphology of markets and neighborhoods within the Walled City of Lahore using space syntax analysis. The research investigates the hierarchical relationships between these commercial and residential areas.
Methodology:
An axial map of the Walled City’s street system was analyzed to determine key space syntax metrics: choice (betweenness centrality), integration, connectivity, and intelligibility [Hillier & Hanson, 1984]. We then observed the correlations between the locations of major markets and neighborhoods and these resulting metrics.
Conclusions:
The Walled City is a complex web of social relations, particularly between local residents and the outsiders who frequent its marketplaces. This complexity makes it difficult for outsiders to form a coherent mental map. At the local scale, however, the system offers greater intelligibility. Its irregular forms create distinct landmarks, which enhances navigability for those familiar with the area.
