Bangkok: A Metropolis Forged by Water and Modernity
I flew straight to Bangkok in the summer after wrapping up my second semester at Georgia Tech and met my husband at the airport after a year of long distance. We stepped out and were immediately greeted by the monsoon season's heavy downpour and the city's buzzing energy. From our hostel on Khao San Road—the backpacker’s capital of Bangkok—we began exploring Bangkok.
We ventured into incredible temple complexes, witnessing mesmerizing dance and puppet shows that depicted stories of Hanuman's journey through Lanka. In the evening, we discovered a fantastic river-facing, chic restaurant, accessed through seedy back alleys, where we had the most mouthwatering green curry.
The city's nightlife was an adventure in itself. We zipped around in tuk-tuks, enjoying the chaotic energy, and often ended our evenings with warm bowls of khao suey. The food I ate in Bangkok will always remain my highlight of the city along with its elevated live jazz scene. On quieter days, we explored the vibrant night markets and the impromptu street-side music and dance performances. Bangkok will be remembered for its food, incredible Thai hospitality, and nightlife.
